Three of Khamenei's Sons Attend Tehran Funeral as Successor Remains Absent
On the second day of the public funeral for Iran's late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, three of his sons were seen at the ceremony in Tehran, while his designated successor, Mojtaba Khamenei, was not present.
Thousands of mourners gathered at Tehran's Imam Khomeini Grand Mosalla on Sunday for the second day of the public funeral for the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The former leader's body and those of four family members killed in the same strike have been lying in state since Saturday, according to Iranian semi-official media.
State media footage showed three of Khamenei's sons—Mostafa, Meysam and Masoud—standing near the coffins, while Brig. Gen. Ahmad Vahidi, commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, was among officials lining the front row. His designated successor, Mojtaba Khamenei, who has not appeared publicly since February, was absent from the ceremony.
Mourners expressed anger and calls for revenge, with one participant saying, "This is by itself the revenge. They should understand that the unity of the people is the revenge." Another attendee noted traveling over 1,000 km to attend, adding, "Our strength is shown here."
Iran's Health Ministry estimates that up to 15 million people may take part in the multi-day funeral events. Foreign dignitaries have been thanked for attending, though no schedule for Mojtaba Khamenei's appearance has been announced.
