U.S. Men’s Team Advances Past Bosnia Despite Red Card

Summary

The United States defeated Bosnia and Herzegovina 2-0 in the World Cup round of 32, holding on after striker Folarin Balogun was sent off, and will face Belgium in the next round.

The United States progressed to the World Cup round of 16 with a 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina on Wednesday in Santa Clara, California. Goals came from Folarin Balogun before halftime and Malik Tillman early in the second half. Balogun was shown a red card in the 64th minute for a studs-up challenge, leaving the U.S. to defend a one-goal lead with ten men.

Despite the dismissal, the team maintained its structure, according to captain Tim Ream, who said the squad remained calm and focused and did not need to change tactics. Christian Pulisic added that the side continued to create attacking opportunities while also defending deeper when necessary.

Tillman, who scored the second goal, described the set-piece preparation with teammate Antonee Robinson and noted the coaching staff’s encouragement of creative play. Midfielder Weston McKennie said the win meets the high expectations the team has set for itself and that the focus now shifts to the upcoming match against Belgium.

The United States will meet Belgium, whose midfield includes Kevin De Bruyne, in the round of 16.
