The agency listed the key visual characteristics that help the public differentiate species such as the black-legged, lone star and American dog tick. It explained where each species is most frequently encountered, noting regional hotspots for Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever and other tick-borne illnesses.

CDC officials warned that bites can lead to serious health problems if not treated promptly. The guidance concluded with a recommendation for regular skin checks and immediate removal of any attached ticks.
