Spurs sign veteran forward Tobias Harris to two-year contract

Summary

San Antonio agreed to a two-year, $31 million deal with 33-year-old forward Tobias Harris, adding a seasoned wing player to a roster that already includes Victor Wembanyama and several guards.

San Antonio announced a two-year, $31 million contract with veteran forward Tobias Harris, who is 33 and will turn 34 on July 15. Harris posted averages of 13.3 points, 5.1 rebounds and 2.5 assists for the Detroit Pistons last season, shooting 46.7% from the field and 36.8% from three-point range. In the playoffs he increased his production to 18.1 points and 7.2 rebounds, though his three-point shooting fell to 29.2%.

"Harris will give San Antonio another big-bodied veteran who can space the floor next to Victor Wembanyama and the guards, with the ability to create his own shot when needed," a team spokesperson said.

The contract utilizes the non-taxpayer mid-level exception at roughly $15 million per year and is set to expire before the Spurs need to re-sign rookie Dylan Harper. Harris will compete for playing time with Julian Champagnie and other wing players such as Keldon Johnson, Carter Bryant and Harrison Barnes, giving head coach Gregg Popovich a range of options in a crowded rotation. The team still has two roster spots and two-way contracts to fill before training camp.
