Four Fatalities Reported During Mexico City World Cup Celebration
Health officials said four people died from asphyxiation and cardiac arrest while celebrating Mexico's World Cup win in downtown Mexico City.
Mexico City health authorities confirmed that four people died during celebrations after the national team secured a Round of 16 berth. Two women, aged 48 and 44, and a 19-year-old man were found unconscious near the Angel of Independence monument and later died of asphyxiation, according to the Health Secretariat's post on X. A separate case involved a man in his thirties who suffered an epileptic seizure, convulsions and gastrointestinal bleeding; he was hospitalized and died of cardiorespiratory arrest, Health Secretary Nadine Gasman said at a news conference.
Mayor Clara Brugada said emergency crews arrived promptly after reports of the unconscious individuals but could not prevent the deaths. She urged residents to celebrate responsibly and suggested avoiding the city center, recommending a concert in the eastern part of the city instead.
Thousands of revelers gathered along the 5-kilometer Paseo de la Reforma, with fireworks lighting the sky around the Angel monument. Officials estimated about 1.4 million people were on the streets, prompting calls to disperse crowds and reduce overcrowding.
