Michael Weatherly to Reprise Tony DiNozzo on NCIS Season 24
Michael Weatherly will return to NCIS for a season-long arc as Tony DiNozzo in the upcoming Season 24, while the series also plans to address the vacancy left by Director Leon Vance.
Michael Weatherly confirmed via the show’s official Instagram that he will reprise his original role as Tony DiNozzo for a season-long storyline in NCIS Season 24, which premieres this fall on Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ahead of the new spin-off NCIS: New York.
The actor, an original cast member from the series’ 2003 debut, played DiNozzo for 13 seasons before departing in 2016. He made a brief return in Season 21 for a funeral episode and later starred in the Paramount+ spin-off NCIS: Tony & Ziva, which was cancelled after one season.
Weatherly is not the only former cast member slated to appear; Mark Harmon is set to reprise his role as Gibbs in the prequel series NCIS: Origins for a season-long arc.
The return raises speculation about who will fill the leadership void after Director Leon Vance’s death in the series’ 500th episode. Actor Brian Dietzen expressed a preference for a familiar face to assume the role, noting the need for stability.
"My preference, I'd like to see a familiar face," Dietzen told TVLine.
Showrunner Steven Binder said the production is evaluating several possibilities for a new director and will consider casting opportunities that align with the show’s needs.
"We're going to keep our ear to the ground, and if a casting opportunity comes our way, we're going to take it," Binder said.
Fans are invited to share their opinions on DiNozzo’s return and potential new role on the series.
