Judge Halts USPS Implementation of Trump's Mail-Ballot Order
U. S. District Judge Emmet Sullivan in Washington, D. C. blocked the United States Postal Service from carrying out President Donald Trump’s executive directive on mail-in ballot handling, citing a breach of a 2020 settlement with the NAACP.
The judge ruled that the Postal Service’s proposed enforcement of the order would conflict with the terms of the settlement that required the agency to maintain nondiscriminatory mail processing practices. According to the court filing, the settlement was reached in 2020 after the NAACP sued the Postal Service over alleged discriminatory treatment of minority voters. By issuing the injunction, Sullivan prevented the agency from implementing any changes that would prioritize election-related mail over other mail. The decision leaves the Postal Service’s existing mail-handling procedures in place pending further legal review.
