McConnell Remains in Rehab, Not Cleared to Return to Senate

Resumen

Sen. Mitch McConnell, 84, is still undergoing physical therapy at a rehabilitation facility after a June fall and has not been cleared to resume his Senate duties.

Sen. Mitch McConnell, the 84-year-old Republican leader from Kentucky, remains in a rehabilitation center for physical therapy following a fall at his home in June that required a week-long hospital stay. A statement from the Office of the Attending Physician released on Monday said he continues a strenuous rehabilitation program but has not yet received medical clearance to leave the facility and return to his Senate office.

"Senator McConnell continues his recovery from a fall at home in June," the statement read. "Since his discharge from hospital care, he has maintained a strenuous course of physical therapy and rehabilitation."

The physician’s office added that his regimen includes multiple daily sessions aimed at rebuilding strength and reducing the risk of future falls, noting that his childhood polio continues to affect his mobility.

"I’m still working hard to get back to my full schedule of work in the Senate and in Kentucky, keeping up with intense physical therapy per my doctors’ orders," McConnell said in a personal statement.

He confirmed he will miss the upcoming Fancy Farm political picnic in western Kentucky. Earlier this month, McConnell had disclosed that he also dealt with pneumonia after the fall, prompting his transfer from hospital to the rehab center.

"As always, I appreciate all of your continued well wishes, and I’m looking forward to getting back to the Senate and to Kentucky soon," he added.
