CDC warns of early surge in West Nile cases and urges mosquito precautions

Summary

The CDC confirmed 48 West Nile virus cases by June 30, the highest early-season count since 2004, and advised the public to use repellents and eliminate standing water.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported 48 confirmed West Nile virus infections as of June 30, including 38 severe cases, marking an early-season level not seen since 2004. The agency said 23 states have reported the virus, the most in a decade.

"These findings serve as an important reminder that mosquito season is well underway," said Dr. Erin Staples, a CDC insect-borne disease expert, adding that families should take simple steps to protect themselves during outdoor activities.

Arizona accounts for the majority of cases, with 32 infections statewide and 29 in Maricopa County, where four deaths have been recorded. County health officials recommended using DEET-based repellents, repairing window screens, and removing any standing water, noting that even a small overturned bottle cap can serve as a breeding site.

The CDC also advises wearing long, loose-fitting clothing and avoiding outdoor exposure at dusk and dawn, when the primary mosquito vectors are most active. While many infections are asymptomatic or cause mild flu-like symptoms, severe cases can lead to inflammation of the brain or spinal cord, posing higher risks for adults over 60 and individuals with compromised immune systems.
