Conan O'Brien attributes shift in drive to age-related testosterone decline

Summary

The comedian said a conversation with his mother-in-law led him to consider andropause as a factor in his reduced intensity, while doctors note testosterone loss can affect mood and motivation.

Conan O’Brien, 63, said a recent discussion with his mother-in-law made him realize that a gradual drop in testosterone may be influencing his feeling of reduced intensity compared with earlier decades. The comedian, who hosts the podcast “Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend,” recounted telling his mother-in-law that he feels “wiser” and “less intense,” only to be told that his testosterone level has declined.

“No, no, no. You just have less of that asshole juice running through your body,” he quoted her as saying.

Medical experts explained that andropause, often called male menopause, involves a slow decline in testosterone that can affect not only libido and muscle mass but also drive, competitiveness and emotional reactivity. Dr. Hal Mohammed, Men’s Health Chief Medical Officer at Gameday, said, “There’s a misconception that testosterone is only about libido and muscle mass. But it definitely influences drive, competitiveness, assertiveness and emotional reactivity.”

Mohammed cautioned that personality changes are not solely hormonal, adding that life experience, health and environment also play roles. He noted that while low testosterone can influence energy and behavior, it does not define a person.

Research estimates that about five million men in the United States have low testosterone, with natural production falling roughly 1% per year after age 30 and potentially dropping up to 50% by age 70. Dr. Pete Stahl, Head of Men’s Health at Hims, said the condition affects 30-40% of men in their 40s and 50s and can be linked to broader health risks such as diabetes, fractures, anemia and cardiovascular issues.

Stahl emphasized that diagnosing and treating testosterone deficiency is an important part of men’s healthcare, noting that appropriate therapy can improve quality of life and overall healthspan.
