Lakers acquire center Walker Kessler from Jazz in exchange for future first-round picks

Summary

Los Angeles obtained shot-blocking center Walker Kessler from Utah in a trade that includes unprotected first-round selections in 2031 and 2033, with the player expected to sign a four-year contract.

Los Angeles Lakers have completed a trade with the Utah Jazz that sends center Walker Kessler to the Lakers. In return, Utah will receive unprotected first-round draft picks in 2031 and 2033, along with the right to swap first-round picks in 2028 and 2030. Reports indicate Kessler is set to sign a four-year, $130 million contract with the Lakers.

Kessler, recognized as one of the league’s top shot blockers, missed the 2025-26 season after undergoing surgery for a left shoulder labral tear. Prior to the injury, he posted averages of 11.1 points, 12.2 rebounds and 2.4 blocks per game in the 2024-25 season and was named to the All-Rookie First Team in 2023-24.

The addition comes as the Lakers reshape their roster following LeBron James’ announcement that he will not return for the next season. Guard Austin Reaves reportedly agreed to a four-year, $185 million extension, positioning him alongside newly acquired Kessler and star guard Luka Dončić as the core of the team’s next iteration.

Kessler began the current season strongly, recording 14.4 points on 70.3% shooting, 10.8 rebounds and 1.8 blocks over five games, and demonstrated improved three-point shooting, making six of eight attempts.
