Russia Temporarily Suspends Railway Crossings with Finland, Estonia and Latvia
Russia announced a temporary suspension of rail traffic at several border checkpoints with Finland, Estonia and Latvia, without giving a reason, prompting speculation about military motives.
Russia said on Tuesday that it would temporarily halt the movement of people, vehicles, goods and cargo through a number of railway border crossings with Finland, Estonia and Latvia, effective from Wednesday. The order, issued by the Kremlin, did not include an explanation for the closures. The Foreign Ministry was tasked with informing the three neighbouring states.
The suspensions will affect several checkpoints on the Finnish border, including Vyborg, Vartsilya, Lyuttya, Saint Petersburg-Finlandsky and Svetogorsk, as well as the Pechory-Pskov crossing with Estonia and the Pytalovo crossing with Latvia.
Analysts have linked the move to recent developments in the region, such as Finland’s plan to partner with a U.S. defence firm on a rocket-system maintenance centre, and to broader concerns about Russia’s military posture near NATO borders. Some observers also note rumours of a possible new mobilisation effort in Russia later this year, citing statements from Ukrainian officials and reports of recruitment shortfalls.
The Kremlin has not commented on the reasons for the railway shutdowns, and the affected neighbouring countries have yet to respond publicly.
