Five Hospitalized After Firebomb Attacks on New Democracy Members' Homes in Thessaloniki

Summary

Three firebomb attacks on residences of Greece's ruling New Democracy party in Thessaloniki injured five people, including a parliamentary candidate's mother who remains in critical condition.

Three firebomb attacks were carried out in the early hours of Wednesday in Thessaloniki, targeting the homes of members of the governing New Democracy party. The devices, made from camping-gas canisters, ignited cars and motorcycles and caused five injuries, with one victim placed in intensive care.

Parliamentary candidate Afroditi Nestora and her parents were among those hospitalized; her mother was reported to be in critical condition after being intubated. Two other residents of the same apartment building were also treated for injuries.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis travelled to the city to visit the patients and described the incidents as a "cowardly, murderous attack." He added that violence has no place in society and that the perpetrators would be treated as criminals.

The party’s political committee secretary, Konstantinos Kyranakis, said the attacks constituted a terrorist act aimed at killing and warned that New Democracy would not be terrorised.

Greek authorities note that attacks by extremist groups on political figures and officials occur relatively often, usually resulting in property damage rather than casualties.
