Sony to Phase Out PlayStation Store on PS3 and Vita by 2027
Sony announced that the PlayStation Store for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita will be discontinued, with closures beginning in select markets in 2026 and ending globally by July 2027.
Sony said it will shut down the PlayStation Store for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita, ending digital sales on the two legacy platforms. The closures will start in August 2026 for Mexico, Honduras and Nicaragua, with additional Latin American and Middle Eastern regions following later that year. All remaining markets are slated to see the stores close in July 2027.
After the shutdown, owners of PS3 and Vita consoles will no longer be able to purchase new digital titles. Sony noted that the decision reflects a shift toward supporting newer devices that comprise the majority of its user base.
"We know this news may be disappointing to PS3 and PS Vita players who hold a special place in their hearts for this generation of gaming. PS3 and PS Vita represent an important era in our PlayStation history, so this was not an easy decision for us to make," the company wrote in a PlayStation Blog post.
The PlayStation Store first launched on the PS3 in 2006, marking a two-decade run for the service on that console. This marks the first time Sony has retired a digital storefront for a legacy platform, a step previously taken by competitors for older systems.
