Kroger to Acquire Giant Eagle for $1.65 Billion

Summary

Kroger announced a definitive agreement to purchase Pittsburgh-based grocery chain Giant Eagle for $1.65 billion, with the deal expected to close in 2027.

Kroger said it has reached a definitive agreement to buy Giant Eagle for $1.65 billion in cash, with the transaction slated to close in 2027. The acquisition would extend Kroger’s presence into markets adjacent to its existing footprint.

"Giant Eagle is a well-run, high-quality regional grocer with a strong reputation for fresh products, pharmacy, private label and customer loyalty," Kroger CEO Greg Foran said in a release. "We evaluated the opportunity carefully, and the strategic fit is clear. Giant Eagle expands our reach into attractive adjacent markets, allowing us to do what we do best: run outstanding stores, deliver fresh foods and convenient meal solutions at affordable prices, and take care of our customers and associates every single day." Kroger also indicated it will apply its "Zero Hunger | Zero Waste" impact plan to the new locations. Giant Eagle CEO Bill Artman described the deal as a new chapter for employees, customers and partners, adding that the combined companies aim to improve quality, service and value while creating growth opportunities for staff. The companies have not disclosed whether the Giant Eagle brand will be retained after the merger.
