Brother of NFL defensive end Calais Campbell charged with murder in mother's death

Summary

Ciarre Campbell was booked on murder, aggravated assault and weapons charges after his mother, Nateal Campbell, was found dead in Atlanta; the family confirmed her death but declined comment on the charges.

Atlanta police booked Ciarre Campbell, the brother of Ravens defensive end Calais Campbell, on murder, aggravated assault and weapons possession charges after a welfare check at the family home uncovered the body of their mother, Nateal Campbell. The arrest was made early Wednesday at Fulton County Jail, according to local television reports.

The Campbell family issued a statement confirming the matriarch’s death and requesting privacy while they mourn. The statement noted that the details of the death remain under investigation.

Lt. Christopher Butler, head of the Atlanta Police Department’s homicide unit, said officers had responded to a welfare-check call on Tuesday afternoon and found the body. He added that prior calls to the residence in April involved a possible arson incident and that there were indications of mental-health concerns involving an individual at the home.

Calais Campbell, a six-time Pro Bowler entering his 19th NFL season, has previously been recognized as the league’s Walter Payton Man of the Year. He and his family co-founded the Charles R. Campbell Foundation, which was established to honor his late father and provide mentorship and educational support.
