Colorado wildfire razes dozens of homes across two counties

Summary

The Aspen Acres Fire in southern Colorado has destroyed 55 homes in Custer County and over 100 structures in Pueblo County, prompting mandatory evacuations and a multi-agency firefighting effort.

A fast-moving wildfire known as the Aspen Acres Fire has burned more than 28,000 acres in southern Colorado, destroying 55 homes in Custer County and over 100 structures in Pueblo County, officials said. The blaze remains uncontained, and fire crews, including eight air tankers, are working to slow its spread and protect remaining properties.

Pueblo County Sheriff David J. Lucero briefed reporters, noting that mandatory evacuations are in effect for the towns of Beulah, Rye and San Isabel. An evacuation center has been set up at Pueblo County Parks and Recreation, with additional accommodations for large animals at the Colorado State Fairgrounds. Updates are posted on the sheriff’s website.

"First and foremost, our thoughts are with every family, business owner, rancher and resident who has been affected by the Aspen Acres Fire," Lucero said.

One firefighter suffered injuries while battling the fire; no other casualties have been reported. The cause of the blaze is still under investigation.

The fire is one of nine major wildfires currently active in Colorado, including the Big Sheep Fire in Huerfano County, which has burned more than 1,100 acres.
