France reaches World Cup quarterfinals after penalty win over Paraguay
France defeated Sweden, with Kylian Mbappé scoring, to move into the knockout stage of the 2026 World Cup, The Guardian reported. Al Jazeera later said Mbappé scored twice as France beat Sweden 3-0, tying Lionel Messi on six goals. The Associated Press echoed the 3-0 result and noted that the win set up a round-of-16 clash with Paraguay.
The New York Times reported a 4-0 victory over Sweden, featuring 25 shots, and confirmed France would face Paraguay in the quarter-finals. Yahoo Sports subsequently reported that France actually defeated Paraguay 1-0 in the round of 16, with Mbappé converting a penalty to secure a place in the quarterfinals. This later report superseded the earlier Sweden accounts.
