LeBron James' Agent Says Decision Won't Be Rushed as Free Agency Continues
Agent Rich Paul told media outlets that LeBron James will take his time choosing a new team, while former Heat president Pat Riley said his relationship with James has improved but the Heat remain one of several suitors.
LeBron James' representative Rich Paul appeared on "The Pat McAfee Show" on Tuesday, July 21, urging fans and observers to be patient as the NBA star finalizes his free-agency choice. Paul said he does not know which team James prefers and emphasized that the decision involves "business, family, and basketball" and cannot be hurried.
"I have a job to do to set the table for him, but it’s his choice," Paul told the show.
Earlier, Paul reiterated the same stance on the "Game Over" podcast, noting that league commissioner Adam Silver's request for a prompt decision would not affect James' timeline.
"If (LeBron) doesn’t know – you can’t rush it … we’re not going to be rushed. It’s his choice to make," Paul said.
Miami Heat president Pat Riley, speaking on "The Dan Le Betard Show" on July 20, said his feelings toward James have softened over the past 12 years. Riley recalled the disappointment when James left for Cleveland in 2014 but added that the two have since exchanged pleasantries at events, including a recent Lakers ceremony honoring Riley. He confirmed the Heat are among several teams waiting for James' decision.
"We’re just sort of waiting on him at this point," Riley said.
