LeBron James hints decision on next team is imminent amid free-agency appearances
LeBron James said his free-agency decision will be made soon, citing basketball and family considerations, but offered no clues about his preferred destination.
LeBron James used Thursday's media appearances at Fanatics Fest in New York to tell fans his free-agency decision will come shortly, though he gave no indication of which team he favors. The 41-year-old, who left the Los Angeles Lakers on June 30 after eight seasons, said he must weigh both basketball and personal factors before committing to a new club.
During a conversation on his "Mind the Game" podcast with co-host Tyrese Haliburton, James joked that he had discussed his options privately and declined to answer direct questions about potential destinations. He mentioned hearing suggestions ranging from the Warriors and the Miami Heat to a tongue-in-cheek suggestion of joining the New York Yankees, but offered no substantive hint.
"I won't hold you guys up for too much longer," James said, adding that the decision also involves his family. He highlighted the importance of his 22-year-old son Bronny, who recently became a former teammate, as well as his younger son Bryce, a University of Arizona player, and his 11-year-old daughter Zhuri.
"There are so many other factors that I'm factoring in right now: what best fits me as a player, what best fits me as a person, what best fits me and my happiness and also my family as well," he explained.
James affirmed his intent to continue playing beyond the upcoming season, noting that he is considering whether to retire after one or two more years, which would extend his record-setting career to 24 or 25 seasons.
He also paid tribute to his former Lakers organization, thanking owner Jeanie Buss, the Buss family, general manager Rob Pelinka, coaches and teammates for an "unbelievable ride" during his eight-year tenure.
No concrete leads emerged from other rumor sources cited on Thursday, leaving the league and fans awaiting an official announcement in the coming days.
