LeBron James signals he will leave Lakers for 2026-27 season

Summary

LeBron James has told the Los Angeles Lakers he will not return for the 2026-27 season, with reports indicating the Golden State Warriors are interested in acquiring him.

LeBron James informed the Los Angeles Lakers that he will not be returning for the 2026-27 season, prompting the franchise to consider moving forward without him. The news was relayed by Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul to ESPN's Shams Charania on Tuesday.

"James has informed the Lakers that the franchise can move on without him because he will play elsewhere," Paul said.

Sources indicated that the Golden State Warriors are preparing to pursue James once free agency opens on Tuesday at 6 p.m. ET. The Warriors' flexibility increased after Draymond Green declined his $27.6 million player option, potentially allowing a trade involving Washington Wizards forward Anthony Davis, which could reunite the former Lakers teammates.

The 41-year-old, who will turn 42 in December, posted averages of 20.9 points, 7.2 assists and 6.1 rebounds during the regular season and improved his numbers in the playoffs. He led the Lakers to a first-round series win over the Houston Rockets.

James missed the first month of the previous season due to sciatica, ending his 21-year All-NBA streak. He remains an active All-Star and four-time champion as he approaches what many view as the final chapter of his career.
