LeBron James to Leave Lakers, Plans to Play 2026-27 Season with New Team

LeBron James told the Los Angeles Lakers he will explore free-agency options for the 2026-27 season, ending an eight-year stint that included a 2020 championship. The Lakers confirmed the news through a statement from team president Jeanie Buss, thanking James for his contributions and wishing him well.

James responded with a thank-you message to the organization. The decision was made after a conversation with Lakers president Rob Pelinka, according to ESPN reporter Shams Charania, who said James wanted to show courtesy before free agency opened.

Despite being 41, James posted averages of 20.9 points, 7.2 assists and 6.1 rebounds over 60 games this season, helping the Lakers secure the No. 4 seed in the Western Conference. The team advanced past the first round but was swept in the second round by the Oklahoma City Thunder.

NBA free agency opens on June 30. The Golden State Warriors are reported to be the leading suitor, aiming to pair James with Stephen Curry, Draymond Green and Anthony Davis. The Cleveland Cavaliers have also expressed interest in a possible reunion, while other clubs such as Miami and San Antonio are mentioned as potential destinations.

James, a four-time champion and four-time MVP, remains the league’s all-time scoring leader and ranks among the top in assists and rebounds. Though adding another championship would be challenging, he is expected to continue contributing at an All-Star level through the next season.
