CDC and state health agencies probe multi-state cyclosporiasis outbreak
Monroe County health officials began probing a cluster of cyclosporiasis cases, urging residents with symptoms to seek testing, according to ClickOnDetroit and WDIV Local 4. A day later, the Monroe County Health Department announced it was investigating a rise in infections and repeated the call for testing, as reported by FOX 2 Detroit. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention later reported 145 Cyclospora cayetanensis infections in 17 states, with 20 hospitalizations and no deaths, per Yahoo. Health officials in Lucas County, Ohio, confirmed an increase in cases since early June and launched an investigation into a possible common source, WTVG reported.
In Michigan, health agencies identified more than 170 infections across seven counties and advised the public on preventive measures, according to ClickOnDetroit and WDIV Local 4. The Detroit News said the state recorded 228 cases within ten days, a figure four times the typical annual total, while the source remained unknown.
