Michigan Health Officials Investigate Cyclospora Outbreak Affecting Over 170 Residents
More than 170 people in Michigan have been diagnosed with cyclosporiasis, prompting state and federal health agencies to issue prevention guidelines and launch an investigation into the source of the outbreak.
State and federal health officials warned Michigan residents to practice thorough handwashing and careful handling of fresh produce after more than 170 cases of cyclosporiasis were confirmed across seven counties. The parasite, Cyclospora cayatenensis, is typically found in tropical and subtropical regions and can contaminate imported fruits and vegetables such as basil, cilantro, lettuce mixes, raspberries and snow peas.
The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, together with local health departments and the state department of agriculture, is working to identify a common exposure linked to the outbreak that began on June 22.
"MDHHS is working with local health department[s] in southeastern Michigan to investigate a sudden and large increase in cyclospora cases and identify a common exposure," said Lynn Sutfin, a spokesperson for the department.
The CDC recommends washing hands with soap and water before and after handling raw produce, rinsing all fruits and vegetables under running water, scrubbing firm items with a clean brush, removing damaged portions, and refrigerating cut or cooked produce within two hours. Pre-washed items do not require additional washing.
While the specific source of Michigan’s outbreak remains unknown, previous U.S. incidents have been tied to contaminated salads at fast-food chains and fresh herbs supplied from Mexico. Cyclosporiasis can be treated with antibiotics, but untreated cases may persist for weeks or months.
"Individuals concerned about sudden gastrointestinal illness should contact a health care provider," Sutfin added, urging those with diarrhea or vomiting to stay hydrated, especially during the expected high temperatures.
