US Cyclospora outbreak hits record 6,700 cases, lettuce suspected source
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said the outbreak has produced 6,707 laboratory-confirmed Cyclospora infections across 45 states, with the largest cluster tied to recalled iceberg lettuce from Mexico. Earlier, the CDC had linked the outbreak to shredded iceberg lettuce from Taylor Farms de Mexico in nine states and reported nearly 3,000 cases in 32 states.
Michigan bore the brunt of the illness, with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services documenting more than 3,300 cases by early July after earlier counts of 572 cases in July and over 700 by late June. State health departments in North Carolina, Ohio, Illinois and Florida also recorded dozens to hundreds of infections, prompting local officials to advise thorough washing of fresh produce.
