Paris deputy mayor blames U.S. emissions and air-conditioning use for Europe's deadly heatwave

Summary

Paris deputy mayor for international relations Audrey Pulvar said the United States bears responsibility for the extreme heat that has killed more than 1,300 people in Europe, citing its high greenhouse-gas emissions and widespread air-conditioning.

Paris deputy mayor for international relations Audrey Pulvar said the United States shares responsibility for the record-breaking heat wave that has killed over 1,300 people across Europe. Pulvar responded to criticism from American journalists and social-media influencers who mocked the lack of air-conditioning in French homes during temperatures that reached 104 degrees Fahrenheit.

"As the second-largest emitter of greenhouse gas emissions in the world, you bear a significant amount of responsibility for global warming and the consequences we, in France, are experiencing. Your cities, which are 90 per cent air conditioned, are not unrelated to this," Pulvar wrote on social media. She added that the United States should focus on taking action rather than lecturing France about its climate policies.
