E. Jean Carroll Seeks Court Order for Trump to Pay $5 Million After Supreme Court Declines Review

Summary

Writer E. Jean Carroll has asked a judge to enforce a $5 million damages award against former President Donald Trump, following the Supreme Court’s refusal to hear his appeal.

Writer E. Jean Carroll asked a New York judge on Tuesday to compel former President Donald Trump to pay the nearly $5 million in damages awarded by a jury that found him liable for sexual abuse and defamation. The request follows the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision on Monday to deny Trump’s petition for a review of the case.

In May 2023, a Manhattan jury awarded Carroll $5 million after she alleged that Trump had assaulted her in a department-store dressing room in the mid-1990s and later dismissed the claim as a hoax on social media. Trump has consistently denied the allegations.

Carroll’s attorneys said she had previously agreed to all of Trump’s requests to postpone payment, which now total about $5.8 million with interest. They wrote to the court, “Given the extraordinary lengths he has taken to avoid such payments and that each of those efforts has been denied in full, that cooperation ends today. It is time for him to pay Carroll.”

The lawyers added that after four years of litigation across multiple federal courts, “it is time for this case to end.”

Trump has continued to contest the verdict, claiming the trial judge erred in admitting certain evidence. A federal appeals court upheld the jury’s verdict last year, finding no error that would merit a new trial. After the Supreme Court’s denial, Trump posted on his social-media platform that the court “declined to ‘review’ a fake case” and said he would keep fighting what he described as a “weaponization and lawfare case.”

Trump is also appealing a separate 2024 jury verdict that found him liable for defamation and awarded Carroll nearly $84 million; a panel of federal judges rejected that appeal last year.
