Carroll requests release of $5.5 million judgment after Supreme Court rejects Trump appeal

Summary

E. Jean Carroll asked a judge to expedite payment of the $5.5 million judgment awarded to her, following the Supreme Court's denial of Donald Trump's petition to overturn the jury's finding of sexual abuse and defamation.

Magazine columnist E. Jean Carroll filed a motion on Tuesday asking a federal judge to accelerate the release of more than $5 million awarded in a defamation and sexual-abuse case against former President Donald Trump. Her attorneys urged the court to adopt a compressed briefing schedule, proposing that all briefs be filed by July 10, citing the Supreme Court's recent denial of Trump's petition for certiorari and the cost of further delay in the nearly four-year litigation.

The Supreme Court declined to hear Trump's appeal on Monday, a challenge that argued the trial judge erred in admitting certain evidence to the jury. That refusal leaves the judgment, which includes interest, in place and ordinarily allows the funds to be transferred from a court-controlled account where Trump had deposited $5.5 million after the 2023 jury verdict.

Trump's legal team reportedly asked Carroll to postpone collection of the money while the former president seeks a rare rehearing from the Supreme Court, a request Carroll's lawyers rejected. > "After four years of litigation across every level of the federal court system, it is time for this case to end. And under the Court’s Stipulation and Order, Carroll is now entitled to obtain payment of the money due under the judgment," the filing said.

Trump has indicated he will continue to pursue legal avenues, including a potential petition for the Supreme Court to reconsider the decision, which must be filed within about 25 days. He also plans to appeal a separate $83 million damages award related to the defamation findings, which was also rendered by the jury.
