Carroll Seeks Court Order for Trump to Pay $5 Million Judgment After Supreme Court Declines Review

E. Jean Carroll filed a petition on Tuesday asking Judge Lewis A. Kaplan of the U.S. District Court in Manhattan to order former President Donald Trump to pay the $5 million civil judgment that a jury awarded her three years ago for sexual abuse and defamation. The request follows the Supreme Court's refusal to review Trump’s appeal of the verdict, which was based on Carroll’s allegation that Trump assaulted her in a Manhattan department store in the 1990s and later called the accusation a hoax on social media.

The jury had found Trump liable and awarded Carroll $5 million; interest has increased the total to just under $5.8 million, according to the filing. Trump has kept the funds in a court-supervised escrow account while continuing his appeal.

"After four years of litigation across every level of the federal court system, it is time for this case to end," Carroll’s lead counsel Roberta A. Kaplan wrote, adding that Trump’s repeated attempts to avoid payment had been rejected and that cooperation ends with this filing.

Trump’s legal team reportedly contacted Carroll’s lawyers on Monday to inquire whether she would agree to a further delay in enforcing the judgment, and indicated the former president might seek a Supreme Court reconsideration. Carroll’s lawyers said she would not consent to any postponement.

A Trump attorney did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The case follows a separate defamation judgment, also against Trump, in which a jury ordered him to pay Carroll $83.3 million in January 2024; his lawyers have signaled they may seek Supreme Court review of that verdict as well.
