Supreme Court Declines Trump's Request to Review $5 Million Carroll Verdict

Summary

The U.S. Supreme Court refused to hear President Donald Trump's appeal of a $5 million civil judgment finding him liable for sexual abuse and defamation of writer E. Jean Carroll.

The Supreme Court on Monday denied President Donald Trump's petition to review a $5 million civil judgment issued after a 2023 jury concluded that he sexually abused and defamed writer E. Jean Carroll. The Court issued no explanation and recorded no public dissent.

A separate case stemming from Carroll's allegations could also reach the high court. In January 2024, another jury ordered Trump to pay $83.3 million for defamation related to statements he made in 2019 after Carroll accused him of a decades-old rape. Trump's attorneys have indicated they will seek Supreme Court review of that verdict as well.

The Monday decision ends the president's effort to overturn the earlier judgment that found he assaulted Carroll in a department-store dressing room in the mid-1990s. It follows a February ruling in which the Court held that Trump exceeded his authority by imposing broad tariffs under emergency powers. After that decision, Trump criticized the justices, calling them "fools and lap dogs" and a "disgrace to our nation."
