Russian ballistic missiles strike Kyiv, causing injuries and fires

Summary

At least two people were injured after a series of Russian ballistic missile attacks hit Kyiv early on June 28, sparking explosions, fires and air-raid alerts across the city.

Explosions were reported in Kyiv just before 2 a.m. local time on June 28, followed by a second wave around 2:35 a.m., as Russian ballistic missiles struck the capital. Tymur Tkachenko, head of the Kyiv City Military Administration, said the attacks injured at least two people in the Darnytskyi district. Fires broke out near a residential building, a service station and an unspecified non-residential structure, and a garage and vehicles covering about 300 square metres were engulfed before the blaze was extinguished, the State Emergency Service said.

Ukraine’s Air Force warned of incoming missiles and air-raid alerts were activated in central and eastern regions. Local officials confirmed that air-defence systems were operating over Kyiv, and social-media posts showed images of missiles being intercepted.

Separate explosions were heard in the eastern cities of Sumy and Kharkiv, according to public broadcaster Suspilne. The latest strike follows a limited missile attack on Kyiv on June 25 that also injured two people, and a larger assault on June 15 that killed five and damaged the historic Kyiv Pechersk Lavra.

In response, Kyiv launched drone attacks on Moscow and its main oil refinery on June 16 and 18, with the June 18 operation described as the largest drone strike on the Russian capital since the war began.
