Tropical storms Mekkhala and Higos cause floods, landslides and one death in Japan

Summary

Heavy rains from storms Mekkhala and Higos triggered landslides and flooding across western Japan, killing a man in his 70s and injuring several others.

Two storm systems, Mekkhala and Higos, brought intense rainfall to Japan on Saturday, prompting landslides, floods and transport disruptions during the country’s rainy season. A 70-year-old man died and three people were injured when a house collapsed in a landslide in Yamaguchi prefecture, Kyodo News reported.

In Kyoto, the Kamo River swelled with muddy water, leading authorities to issue a flooding alert for parts of Kyoto, Osaka and surrounding areas. The Fire and Disaster Management Agency said more than 30 homes were flooded in Nara and Hiroshima prefectures on Friday. Heavy rain also caused delays to train services and cancelled flights in the affected regions.
