U.S. conducts airstrikes on Iranian sites after cargo ship drone attack in Strait of Hormuz
U.S. forces hit missile, drone and radar installations in Iran following Tehran's drone strike on a commercial vessel, prompting warnings of further retaliation.
U.S. Central Command announced Friday that American aircraft struck four Iranian locations along the Strait of Hormuz and on Qeshm Island, targeting missile and drone storage sites and coastal radar installations. The strikes were described as a response to Iran's June 25 attack on the Singapore-flagged cargo ship M/V Ever Lovely, which was hit by a one-way attack drone while exiting the waterway.
Vice President JD Vance warned on social media that any further Iranian aggression would be met with force, stating, "Violence will be met with violence" and urging Tehran to resolve disputes through direct communication.
A senior U.S. defense official confirmed that the operations were completed and that U.S. forces remain “present and vigilant” in the region, maintaining the current force posture that includes aircraft carriers, destroyers and Marine units.
President Donald Trump declined to specify forthcoming actions but said the United States would respond to Iran's conduct, adding that the Strait of Hormuz remains open for navigation.
