U.S. military hits Iranian missile sites after drone attack on commercial vessel

Summary

The United States launched strikes on Iranian missile and drone storage facilities after a drone from Iran hit the cargo ship Ever Lovely in the Strait of Hormuz, which Washington said breached a cease-fire agreement.

U.S. Central Command said aircraft attacked Iranian missile and drone storage locations and coastal radar sites on Friday, responding to a drone strike that hit the Singapore-flagged cargo ship Ever Lovely in the Strait of Hormuz. The drone, launched from Iran on Thursday, struck the vessel as it passed the strait off Oman, but the ship was able to continue its voyage.

"The unwarranted aggression against commercial shipping by Iranian forces clearly violated the ceasefire," the command said.

"Furthermore, Iran's dangerous behavior undermined freedom of navigation as commerce increasingly flows through the vital international trade corridor," the statement added.

President Donald Trump said American forces shot down three of four one-way attack drones launched by Iran, calling the incident a violation of the cease-fire agreement. The strike follows a memorandum of understanding signed by Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian aimed at a permanent peace deal, and a recent visit by Vice President JD Vance to Switzerland for talks with Iranian officials.
