Utah Governor Issues State of Emergency, Bans Fireworks for Independence Day

Utah Governor Spencer Cox signed an emergency order on Thursday that bans the use of fireworks across the state for the Fourth of July. The measure responds to severe wildfire conditions that officials say are “extremely hazardous,” with 94% of the state in severe or extreme drought and strong winds forecast.

The ban is temporary and does not alter existing state law that limits municipal authority over fireworks restrictions. Local governments may still open specific sites where fireworks can be launched safely, according to the order.

Cox noted that firefighters are currently battling five large wildfires, including the Iron Fire near Eureka, which has burned more than 37,000 acres and is believed to have been started by illegal fireworks, and the Cottonwood Fire, which has exceeded 70,000 acres and is among the nation’s largest active fires. The fires have prompted evacuations and caused property loss.

The National Weather Service issued a near-statewide Red Flag Warning, citing dry thunderstorms and wind gusts up to 50 mph that could accelerate fire spread. Officials warned that dry lightning could spark additional blazes.

Draper Mayor Troy Walker said the city will enforce a citywide fireworks ban in line with the governor’s order, while Republican state Representative Matt McPherson questioned the legality of the emergency measure and warned that it could lead people to set off fireworks in less controlled locations, potentially increasing fire risk.

Cox urged residents to refrain from using fireworks now and consider purchasing them for later use, emphasizing that the current conditions are an exception to the usual regulatory framework.
