King Charles and Queen Camilla to remain at Clarence House after Buckingham Palace renovation

Resumen

Following a £500,000 refurbishment, Buckingham Palace will stay a working royal venue while King Charles III and Queen Camilla continue to reside at Clarence House.

Buckingham Palace is undergoing a £500,000 refurbishment scheduled for completion in March 2027, but King Charles III and Queen Camilla are expected to remain at nearby Clarence House rather than move back into the historic residence. Privy Purse official James Chalmers told the Sun that the monarchs will retain access to private rooms in the palace for use during working days and that those spaces could serve as residential accommodation in the future.

A palace spokesperson said the building will continue to function as a working home and that the renovation aims to increase public access to a publicly funded site, estimating roughly 700,000 visitors annually. The monarch plans to host receptions, garden parties and diplomatic meetings at the palace, which the spokesperson described as the "beating heart of the Monarchy" while noting it will no longer serve as the royal family's primary residence.

Prince William is also expected to stay at his family home, Forest Lodge in Windsor, with his wife, Princess Kate, and their three children, even after he ascends to the throne. The royal family has occupied Buckingham Palace since 1837, beginning with Queen Victoria.

Charles, who was diagnosed with cancer in February after surgery for a benign prostate condition, has said his treatment schedule will be reduced in the new year and that he has responded well to therapy.
