Permit filed for possible July 4 street closure near Madison Square Garden amid wedding speculation
City officials confirmed a permit to close streets around Madison Square Garden from July 2 to 4, fueling rumors that Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce may hold their wedding there.
New York City officials said a permit was submitted in early June to close roads surrounding Madison Square Garden from July 2 through July 4, covering the Independence Day weekend. The application, filed by an undisclosed party, does not list the names of pop star Taylor Swift or NFL player Travis Kelce, according to a mayor's office spokesperson.
The New York Times reported that several Kansas City Chiefs players have booked nearby hotel rooms and that Amtrak police have been alerted to expect a high-profile wedding at the venue during the busy holiday period. The same report said Swift is planning an intimate gathering of about 100 guests on July 2, followed by a larger celebration on July 3, possibly featuring performances.
Fans have debated the suitability of Madison Square Garden, a 19,500-seat arena in Midtown Manhattan, as a wedding location. Some view the arena’s central position and private underground entrances as practical for security and privacy, while others note its lack of natural scenery.
"MSG is where music and sports come together at the most famous venue in the world," said Nicki Vleisides, a New York resident who co-hosts a podcast about Swift's music.
"No drones or paparazzi can get in or out, and Taylor, Travis and guests can enter underground from blocks away with no chance of getting photographed," added another commentator.
The permit filing and related reports have intensified speculation, but no official confirmation of the wedding venue has been released.
