Two strong earthquakes strike Venezuela, causing building collapses in Caracas

Summary

Two successive quakes of magnitude 7.1 and 7.5 hit western Venezuela on Wednesday, damaging structures in Caracas and prompting evacuations and emergency response.

Two strong earthquakes struck western Venezuela on Wednesday evening, causing building collapses and widespread damage in the capital, Caracas. The U.S. Geological Survey reported the first quake at magnitude 7.1, centered west of Morón along the Caribbean coast, about 168 km from Caracas, at a depth of 13 km. Minutes later a second, larger tremor of magnitude 7.5 was recorded, with its epicenter 16 km southwest of Morón and a depth of 10 km.

The U.S. Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued alerts for Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. In Caracas, residents fled swaying structures, and observers reported walls collapsing and dust plumes rising in busy neighborhoods.

Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello said the tremors were felt across several states and described the situation in the Altamira district as “alarming,” with homes and buildings collapsed. He urged people to stay outdoors because aftershocks could cause further damage and asked motorists to clear the way for ambulances.

“We understand that some people may be desperate, but we are acting according to protocols to activate aid and rescue efforts to help those who need it most,” Cabello told state television, adding, “Be very careful with children and the elderly; call each other and check that no one has been harmed.”
