SSPX plans livestreamed consecration of four bishops in Switzerland
The Society of St. Pius X announced it will livestream a ceremony in Econe, Switzerland, to ordain four bishops without a papal mandate. The event is scheduled to take place later this year, and the Society said the ordinations will be carried out by its senior clergy.
Cardinal Gerhard Müller described the planned consecrations as a schismatic act and reiterated that the Traditional Latin Mass remains valid, according to EWTN. Pope Leo XIV wrote to the Society urging it to cancel the scheduled episcopal consecrations, warning that proceeding could lead to a schism and automatic excommunication, DW reported. Vatican officials have said the planned ordinations violate canon law and would trigger the penalty of excommunication if carried out.
