Supergirl opens to modest earnings, joining recent DC box-office setbacks

摘要

The superhero film "Supergirl" earned $38 million in its opening weekend in the U.S. and Canada and $30 million overseas, falling short of expectations and receiving mixed reviews.

The latest DC Studios release, "Supergirl," opened with $38 million in the United States and Canada and added $30 million from international markets, placing it second behind "Toy Story 5" in the domestic box-office for the weekend. The film, directed by Craig Gillespie and produced by James Gunn, was trimmed after test screenings and received a 56% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a "B-" CinemaScore from audiences.

Industry analyst David A. Gross of FranchiseRe noted that superhero movies overall have seen a decline in box-office performance since the pre-pandemic period, with annual revenues in the genre down about $3.5 billion from their 2017-2019 peaks. He added that female-led superhero titles, which previously delivered strong returns such as "Wonder Woman" and "Captain Marvel," have also experienced a downturn.

The $170 million production follows the earlier DC Studios releases led by Gunn and Safran, including 2025's "Superman," which grossed $618 million worldwide. Warner Bros. Discovery, the studio's parent company, is in the process of being acquired by Paramount Skydance, and the next DC film slated for release is "Clayface" in October.

Other weekend releases included Paramount's "Jackass: Best and Last," which earned $8.4 million on a $10 million budget, and Olivia Wilde's comedy "The Invite," which posted a strong per-screen average of $54,158 from seven locations. Micro-budget horror "Obsession" continued its steady performance with $9.8 million in its seventh weekend, while Steven Spielberg's sci-fi thriller "Disclosure Day" slipped to fifth place with $8.1 million.
