Two killed in shooting at Chico library, suspect detained

Summary

Police say a shooter opened fire inside the Chico branch of the Butte County Library on Monday, killing two people; the suspect was apprehended after fleeing the scene.

Police responded to a 911 call shortly after 5 p.m. on Monday reporting gunshots and screams at the Chico branch of the Butte County Library. Officers entered the building, after which the shooter escaped through a back exit and was later taken into custody, officials said.

"The incident this evening was obviously very sad, traumatic for a lot of people. Very traumatic for our community," said Billy Aldridge, Chico police chief, during a news conference.

Two victims died at the scene, while a child sustained a minor injury and was taken to a hospital. A family reunification center was established for those inside the library, and surrounding streets were temporarily closed.

Authorities indicated there is no ongoing public threat and that the investigation suggests the shooter acted alone. The names of the deceased have not been released pending notification of next of kin. All Butte County library branches were closed on Tuesday, and officials asked residents to avoid the area.
