Police officer killed in Montreal hotel shooting

A suspect armed with a long gun opened fire at the Hilton hotel in Montreal's Côte-des-Neiges neighbourhood on Monday morning, killing police Constable Mohamed Lamine Benredouan, 34, and a civilian, and wounding a second officer who remains in stable condition. Police returned fire, killing the shooter, whose motive is still under investigation.

Police Chief Fady Dagher said the incident marked the first death of a Montreal police officer in the line of duty in 24 years. He described the day as "very, very sad" and a "nightmare" in remarks to reporters.

Emergency services were alerted at about 11:35 a.m. after a call reported a person pointing a gun out of a hotel window. Police arriving on scene were met with gunfire. Video footage posted online shows an exchange of fire between officers and a shooter wearing an olive jacket and cargo pants, who appeared to be reloading when hit.

Construction worker Jacob Coutu, who was nearby, said he heard "four of five gunshots" followed by a larger volley as police engaged the suspect, estimating 30 to 40 shots in total.

Public safety officials issued an emergency alert, urging residents to shelter in place and prompting temporary closures of the Décarie expressway and sections of two subway lines. Quebec Domestic Security Minister Ian Lafrenière said the shooting was not classified as a terrorist act after consultation with multiple agencies, including the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and asked the public not to share graphic videos of the incident.

A police spokesperson in British Columbia warned that authorities were monitoring for any documentation or manifesto that might encourage further attacks on law-enforcement personnel.
