Police officer, civilian killed and another officer wounded in Montreal hotel shooting

Summary

A gunfight outside a hotel in Montreal's Côte-des-Neiges neighborhood left one police officer dead, a second officer and a civilian injured, and a suspect dead.

Police responded to a report of gunfire at a hotel in Montreal's Côte-des-Neiges district at about 11:35 a.m. on Monday. Officers encountered a gunman on the ground and exchanged fire, according to Montreal Police Chief Fady Dagher. The confrontation resulted in the deaths of the suspect and Officer Mohamed Lamine Benredouane, 34, who had been with the force since 2021. A second officer and a civilian were wounded; the officer was later stabilized in hospital.

Dagher said the shooting occurred outside the Hilton Garden Inn Montreal Midtown. Video footage verified by NBC News showed individuals in fatigues-style clothing exchanging gunfire with police, an officer taking cover behind a planter, and a civilian approaching the officer before being shot. A long-gun was recovered from the scene.

Police have not released the identities of the suspect or the injured civilian and declined to comment on the civilian's death pending an investigation by Quebec's independent police watchdog, the Bureau des enquêtes indépendantes. The public was advised to avoid the area around Côte-des-Neiges, Highway 40 and Queen Mary and to shelter in place until the alert was lifted after 3 p.m.

Quebec Premier Christine Fréchette requested that the provincial flag be lowered to half-staff, and Montreal Mayor Soraya Martinez Ferrada expressed condolences to the officer’s family and colleagues. Hilton representatives did not respond to requests for comment.
