Police officer and civilian killed in Montreal shooting, gunman also dead

Summary

A shooting in Montreal's Côte-des-Neiges neighbourhood left a police officer, a civilian and the suspect dead, with authorities investigating the motive.

Two people, including a Montreal police officer, were killed in a shooting on Monday in the Côte-des-Neiges area, and the gunman was also shot dead, police said. The incident occurred around 11:30 a.m. local time near a supermarket, shops and a residential building that serve the city’s large Jewish community.

The officer, identified as 34-year-old Mohamed Lamine Benredouane, had been with the police service since 2021. Police chief Fady Dagher described him as a “great, great, great police officer” and said it was the first line-of-duty death for the force since 2002.

A civilian was also killed, though officials have not released the victim’s identity or confirmed any religious affiliation. Another officer was reported seriously wounded. Police urged residents to avoid the area while the investigation continues.

Dagher said the suspect was shot immediately after the attack and that there is no ongoing threat to the community. He could not confirm whether the shooter had called 911 to lure police officers. The Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs said it is monitoring the situation, and Quebec Premier Christine Frechette expressed that she was “deeply shaken” and called for the public to allow authorities to conduct their work without speculation.
