Montreal police officer killed in Côte-des-Neiges shooting, suspect also dead

Summary

A police officer was fatally shot and a suspect killed in a shootout in Montreal's Côte-des-Neiges borough, while a second officer remains hospitalized in stable condition.

A gunfight in the Côte-des-Neiges district of Montreal on Monday left a police officer dead and the suspected shooter also killed, police said. The incident began after officers responded to a 911 call reporting gunshots and a firearm protruding from a window on Décarie Boulevard at about 11:35 a.m. When officers arrived, they were fired upon, prompting an exchange of gunfire.

Montreal Police Chief Fady Dagher said a second officer was taken to hospital in critical condition but is now stable, and one civilian suffered minor injuries. He added that a long-gun used by the suspect was recovered at the scene and that investigators are reviewing a more than 100-page manifesto believed to have been written by the gunman, which law-enforcement sources say contains incel-related content.

"It appeared to be an ambush," a Canadian law-enforcement source told reporters.

"Today, one of our own has fallen while carrying out his duty to protect and serve," Dagher said at a news conference.

Authorities have ordered residents to shelter in place and avoid the area while the perimeter remains in effect. Quebec Premier Christine Fréchette posted a statement on X urging the public to let investigators work and refrain from speculation.

The investigation is ongoing.
