Police officer killed and civilian wounded in Montreal shooting

Summary

A gunman opened fire in Montreal's Côte-des-Neiges district, killing a police officer and a civilian, injuring another officer, and being shot dead by police.

A gunman opened fire around noon on Monday in the Côte-des-Neiges neighbourhood of Montreal, killing a police officer and a civilian and wounding another officer before being shot dead by police, according to police chief Fady Dagher. The suspect, a male, is believed to have acted alone and was killed on the scene.

The incident prompted Quebec to issue an emergency alert at 12:30 p.m. local time warning residents of an armed suspect, which was lifted at about 3:00 p.m. after the situation was contained.

"For now, we don't really know what the motive of this individual was," said Quebec domestic security minister Ian Lafrenière.

"My deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the police officer who died in the line of duty," posted Montreal mayor Soraya Martinez Ferrada on social media.

The officer's death marks the first killing of a Montreal police officer in the line of duty in 24 years, according to the police chief.
