Police officer and civilian killed in Montreal shooting, suspect neutralized

A gunman was neutralized on Monday after a shooting in Montreal's Côte-des-Neiges neighbourhood left a police officer and a civilian dead, authorities said. The incident prompted an alert at about 12:30 p.m. urging residents to stay indoors, lock doors, avoid windows and follow police instructions.
The Montreal police service posted on X that one officer died in the line of duty and that a second, female officer is in critical condition. Mayor Soraya Martinez Ferrada expressed condolences to the officer’s family and asked the public to comply with police directives.
Details about the suspect or the motive have not been released. Local resident Brandon Elkaim, who lives near the scene, said he was surprised by the violence.
