Democratic lawmakers respond to New York primary victories of mayor-endorsed candidates

摘要

Three candidates endorsed by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani won Democratic primaries in New York, prompting mixed reactions from senior members of the Democratic Party.

Three candidates backed by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani secured victories in Democratic primary contests in New York, defeating more moderate opponents. The winners — Darializa Avila Chevalier, Brad Lander and Claire Valdez — are identified by some observers as aligned with socialist-leaning policies.

Former Speaker Nancy Pelosi declined to comment when asked by Fox News Digital about the results, and Representative Ilhan Omar also did not respond to questions regarding the potential impact of the new lawmakers on the Democratic agenda.

Representative Hank Johnson said he welcomed the new members, noting that they would join the Democratic caucus. > "I think Democrats in New York elected three new Democrats that will join our caucus, and I’m looking forward for them participating," Johnson told Fox News Digital.

When asked about criticism of Israel expressed by the three winners, Johnson clarified that the criticism was directed at the Israeli government rather than the country itself. He also referenced comments from Lander, who said it is possible to criticize Israel without being antisemitic.

Johnson linked the situation in the Middle East to broader U.S. foreign-policy concerns, mentioning the relationship between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former President Donald Trump and suggesting that both leaders contributed to regional tensions.

The primary outcomes highlight ongoing debates within the Democratic Party over policy direction and foreign-policy stances.
