Progressive candidates backed by NYC mayor win three congressional primaries
Three left-leaning candidates endorsed by Mayor Zohran Mamdani secured Democratic nominations in New York City, defeating incumbent representatives in two districts and winning an open seat.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani's endorsed slate achieved victories in three New York City House primaries on Tuesday, positioning the candidates for likely election in November. In the 13th district, community organizer Darializa Avila Chevalier narrowly beat five-term incumbent Adriano Espaillat, while former City Comptroller Brad Lander won the 10th district race against Rep. Dan Goldman. In the 7th district, state Rep. Claire Valdez secured the nomination to succeed retiring Rep. Nydia Velázquez, defeating Antonio Reynoso, who had previously received support from Velázquez and the Working Families Party.
The outcomes represent a shift toward more progressive challengers in the city's Democratic contests, with the endorsed candidates having criticized Israel and advocated for expansive economic reforms during their campaigns.
