Progressive challengers win key New York Democratic primaries amid intra-party splits
Democratic socialists backed by Mayor Zohran Mamdani defeated incumbents in New York's 10th and 13th districts, while other primaries produced Republican and Utah GOP winners.
Incumbent Democratic Rep. Adriano Espaillat said his service to New York's 13th Congressional District had been a privilege as he conceded defeat to Democratic socialist Darializa Avila Chevalier, a public-defender investigator endorsed by Mayor Zohran Mamdani. Chevalier, a 32-year-old doctoral student, is projected to win the general election in a district that includes upper Manhattan and parts of the Bronx.
In the 10th District, city councilmember Brad Lander defeated Rep. Dan Goldman. Lander, who is Jewish, criticized Israel's military actions in Gaza and warned against conflating criticism of Israeli policy with antisemitism. He thanked Mayor Mamdani, Senators Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders, and pledged to maintain a triage center that released detained immigrants.
Republican tax official Jeanine Driscoll is projected to win the primary for New York's 4th Congressional District, positioning her for a contest against Democratic Rep. Laura Gillen in a potentially competitive race.
In Utah, Rep. Celeste Maloy secured the Republican nomination for the newly drawn 3rd District after defeating former state legislator Phil Lyman. Maloy, who was endorsed by former President Donald Trump, is expected to be favored in the November general election.
Former U.S. Rep. Ben McAdams won the Democratic primary in Utah's 1st District, defeating several progressive challengers. He will face Republican Riley Owen and Libertarian Jesse West in the general election.
State Assemblymember Micah Lasher won the Democratic primary for New York's 12th District, beating Jack Schlossberg, a political commentator and grandson of former President John F. Kennedy, among others. Lasher advances to the general election in a solidly Democratic district.
Other notable races include retired three-star admiral Nancy Lacore winning the Democratic nomination for South Carolina's 1st District and Rep. Celeste Maloy's Utah primary victory, both highlighted as part of broader partisan battles ahead of the midterm elections.
